Why we pause before we eat
Saying grace is one of the oldest and simplest family traditions there is. It turns an ordinary meal into a moment of gratitude, and it teaches children, without a lecture, that good things come from a good God.
“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights.”James 1:17 (KJV)
“In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”1 Thessalonians 5:18 (KJV)
Short blessings to borrow
For little ones
“Thank You, God, for our food. Thank You for the hands that made it, and for the people at this table. Amen.”
For a busy weeknight
“Lord, thank You for this day, for this meal, and for each other. Help us love well tomorrow. Amen.”
For a holiday table
“Father, thank You for bringing us together. Thank You for every person here and for those we miss. Bless this food, bless this family, and make us grateful and generous. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
Make it a family tradition
Take turns leading grace so everyone gets a chance, including the youngest. Try a “thankful round” on Sundays, where each person names one good thing from the week. At Thanksgiving, keep a running list of answered prayers and read it aloud before the meal.
“O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.”Psalm 136:1 (KJV)
