The second great commandment is very practical
When Jesus was asked which commandment mattered most, He answered with loving God, and then added the one that follows right after it.
“Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.”Matthew 22:39 (KJV)
Loving your neighbor rarely looks dramatic. It usually looks like a casserole, a text, a ride to an appointment, or an hour of your Saturday. The good news for busy people: small and consistent beats big and occasional.
Ten ways to help this month
- Bring a meal to a new mom, a new widow, or a family with someone in the hospital. Ask about allergies first, and use dishes they never have to return.
- Mail a handwritten note to someone who is grieving, especially a few months after the funeral, when the cards stop coming.
- Offer a specific kind of help instead of “let me know if you need anything.” Try: “Can I pick up your groceries Thursday?”
- Check on an older neighbor during storms, heat waves, or power outages.
- Drive someone to church, a doctor’s visit, or the pharmacy.
- Babysit for a tired parent so they can rest, run errands, or go on a date.
- Ask your church, school, or local food pantry what they actually need right now, then give that.
- Use your skills. If you can design, write, organize, or fix things, offer an hour to a ministry or nonprofit that cannot afford it.
- Invite someone who is new in town to share a simple dinner.
- Pray for your neighbors by name, and then let that prayer turn into a knock on the door.
Make room for the stranger, too
“For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in.”Matthew 25:35 (KJV)
“Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.”Matthew 25:40 (KJV)
Hospitality does not require a perfect house. A clean-enough table, a warm drink, and real attention are enough to make someone feel welcome.
“And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.”Galatians 6:9 (KJV)
A small permission slip
You do not have to help everyone. Ask God to show you the one or two people in front of you this week, and start there.
